Blizzard announced a free Overwatch weekend on PS4 and Xbox One with every character and map available, as well as the level up system and loot boxes.
According to a post on the official Overwatch website, everyone will get to experience everything that players have paid for in the upcoming weekend trial.
All 22 of the currently available characters will be playable for free, including 13 maps and game modes (as well as Weekly Brawl, Custom Games and Quick Play). As expected, the confirmed map Eichenwalde and rumored character Sombra won’t be featured, regardless of the latter currently being available on the game’s PC-only testing mode, PTR.
Leveling up, hero customization, and unlocking the loot boxes along with the XP-earning mechanic will be available, though, with players able to keep hold of whatever they unlock if they purchase Overwatch: Origins Edition. No maintenance or downtime periods are planned either, so players can expect to have an uninterrupted experience while exploring the world.
It should be taken into consideration that although PlayStation Plus isn’t required to access the free Overwatch weekend on PS4, Xbox One is required to take part on Xbox One. Overwatch isn’t the only game to do this, with the Battlefield 1 open beta also requiring Xbox Live Gold but not PS Plus. Understandably, a number of Xbox One gamers have already commented that they feel like they’re getting a raw deal here as free game events and weekends are technically free to them.
Right now, it’s unclear as to whether PC players will be able to participate in a free Overwatch weekend in the future. However, the president of NetEase, Li Riqiang, mentioned earlier about the possibility of an Overwatch free trial. Riqiang didn’t get specific with platforms but it appears that if a trial is released (as opposed to just a free weekend) that PC will be included.
Overwatch is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
