Game Awards Will Feature More Gameplay

The host of The Game Awards, Geoff Keighley, reveals that more gameplay footage and less CGI will be shown at this year’s event, as a result of the No Man’s Sky controversy.

The resulting backlash around the Hello Games title has now led The Game Awards to rethink how it does things, with the annual event planned to feature more gameplay footage instead of CGI next time around. In an interview with Polygon, the producer and host of The Game Awards, Geoff Keighley, said that he has “thought about the story of No Man’s Sky a lot,” asking himself “did we create this black hole of hype that the developers couldn’t pull themselves out of? Some of that was authored by me.”

The upcoming show will offer “a little more context about what’s there,” he added, and that “we’re going to get deeper looks at premieres; they’ll run four or five minutes.” Keighley went on saying that “I think people will be surprised at the depth of some of the game content we will show this year.”

Keighley explains that “there’s a good moral of the story and it’s part of what I’m trying to address this year; to have developers be more transparent about the state of their game.” The host of The Game Awards also noted that when No Man’s Sky was announced, “everyone in their mind’s eye came up with an idealized notion of what it was going to be” but because the Hello Games team was so small, “the vision was never going to be achieved.”

The Game Awards isn’t the only way in which the industry has taken steps following the No Man’s Sky controversy. A large Steam redesign was rolled out alongside a new policy – that developers must use screenshots and images indicative of a real gameplay experience instead of artwork or concept images on the Steam pages for their games. The Steam changes have been positively accepted by gamers, with many agreeing that it would stop them from feeling misled.

The Game Awards 2016 will take place on December 1.
