Former Battlefield and Payday 2 developer David Goldfarb reveald his new project, which is a horror game called Project Wight where players control monster fighting vikings.
David Goldfarb is known for his work on the Battlefield franchise, and as a game director of Payday 2. A couple of years ago, Goldfarb made a decision to leave AAA game development behind and started his own studio with other Battlefield series veterans. David’s studio, The Outsiders, finally revealed its first project, a horror game that goes by the time of Project Wight.
Project Wight’s story is set during the early days of the Viking era, but with a twist. In Project Wight’s world, humans share the world with a strange and intelligent set of species. In most typical horror games, the players would control the vikings in order to eradicate the beasts, but in Project Wight, players control the beasts in an attempt to survive against the vikings.
Project Wight seems to be a stealth based game, at least what can be seen from the trailer. Players are encouraged to hide and run from the vikings, as their weapons are a threat to the creatures in the game. It’s not that the monsters are completely defenseless against the vikings though, the older creatures can defend themselves and fight back.
Close to the end of the sneak peek video, the player can be seen while taking contorl of one of the older beasts. The older monsters, or adolescents as Goldfarb calls them, bites into the throat of a viking before sending him flying off a cliff. The adolescent then glides off the cliff to a viking camp on the ground, stunting the vikings with a roar and ripping another throat out while dodging sword attacks.
In a nutshell, Project Wight looks like a pretty unique idea for a horror video game. Gamers have been given a chance to play as monsters in Left 4 Dead’s multiplayer, but it’s not that common that games ‘paint’ humanity as the bad guys. All of this could create an interesting dynamic with provoking themes to go along the violence and gore.
