Activision announced that the Call of Duty VR game will be free for all PlayStation 4 owners, not just for those who purchase Infinite Warfare, as was announced earlier.
Few days ago, Activision announced that PlayStation 4 players who purchase Infinite Warfare would have access to Call of Duty’s VR experience, called Jackal Assault. However, a latest blog post revealed that Jackal Assault will be available to all PS4 owners, even those who don’t purchase Infinite Warfare. Activision says the move is an “added bonus on November 4” for all PlayStation 4 owners, though gamers will have to own a PlayStation VR headset to access the game.
That being said, it’s a good surprise that even those who aren’t planning to pick up Infinite Warfare will be able to play it. There might be those few PlayStation VR owners who try Jackal Assault and purchase Infinite Warfare afterwards. Since the game was planned to be free for those who purchase Infinite Warfare, there’s simply no reason for Activison to hold it back from the rest of the PlayStation VR playerbase. It could be that the game isn’t very long, and will certainly give Activision a greater pool of players to receive feedback from, which will allow the company to make better VR games in the future.
Jackal Assault was initially announced back in September during the Call of Duty XP event. Activision said the game “immerses you in the cockpit of a Jackal, the personal, multi-role fighter jet” from the upcoming Infinite Warfare. Jackal Assault will be one of many games launching alongside the PlayStaton VR release this month.
With the holiday buying season approaching, and competition between Sony and Microsoft as strong as it’s ever been, it appears that Sony’s best interest is to offer as many VR experiences for PlayStation VR owners as possible. Even though Microsoft has announced a VR headset coming in the future, it won’t be here in time for the holiday season and hasn’t yet been confirmed for Xbox, that’s why Sony has to capitalize on the current opportunity to take as many VR-interested gamers as possible. With the Microsoft Project Scorpio release coming up next holiday season, Sony’s windows of opportunity to take over VR sales in the market is small.
Jackal Assault will launch for PlayStation 4 on November 4, 2016 alongside Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, which will both launch for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
