South Park: The Fractured But Whole Got It’s Original Title

Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of the show, reveal that South Park: The Fractured But Whole’s original title and discuss its gameplay in a behind the scenes video for the game.

It’s definitely easy for someone to crack up when reading or even saying the name South Park: The Fractured But Whole aloud, but during the initial phases of development of the game, Matt Stone and Trey Parker had a somewhat different title in mind that would make us laugh in a different way. As it was discussed in the behind the scenes video for South Park: The Fractured But Whole, the upcoming super hero themed RPG from Ubisoft and the comedy duo’s company at South Park Digital Studios had to change the first draft of the title due to retailers refusing to print the words and display them in stores.

During a video made with Stone and Parker, they discuss the evolution of The Fractured But Whole’s combat system from The Stick of Truth, confirming that its familiar JRPG turn based fighting will remain intact, but there will be a new wrinkle of tactical thinking involved, that requires players to plan a few moves ahead during battles. Trey Parker said that players will definitely want to keep it complex enough to be fun and challenging and have strategies, but also keep it simple enough so that it looks like South Park and it is lots of fun – this is how he described The Fractured But Whole’s combat system.

Incorporating gameplay elements from previous entries into sequels is a great idea to keep follow-up titles fresh, yet familiar. But, doing so isn’t always as easy as it seems. Of course, with this being the case, The Fractured But Whole has challenged both Stone and Parker and players as well to use their creative abilities.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole will come out December 6, 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
