Creator of Demon’s Souls, Hidetaka Miyazaki has clarified that if there ever was a Demon’s Souls remake, he and developer From Software likely won’t be involved with the project.
With the launch of Dark Souls 3, series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki put the franchise to rest, and did so with plenty of confidence. The Souls series, which started with Demon’s Souls on the PlayStation 3, became closely associated with extreme challenge, brutal boss fights, and ignorant lore. It has also managed to develop a massive fan base, many of whom are eager to see more. At that point, Miyazaki confirmed that additional Souls games could emerge some day.
Since Bandai Namco has ownership over the Dark Souls brand, and Sony owns the Demon’s Souls brand, it’s a huge possibility that a reboot or remaster could happen from those publishers. Even though Miyazaki acknowledged that, if such remaster should occur, he doesn’t want to be a part of it.
Miyazaki didn’t cut up words either, saying that developer From Software won’t be involved with any sort of remaster for any of the Souls properties. However, since From Software doesn’t have ownership over the rights to the IP, the studio can’t stop development either.
With the Dark Souls series pretty aptly tied up with the third entry, it seems likely that Bandai will put the IP to rest. Dark Souls 2 made the leap to PC and current gen platforms with the Scholar of the First Sin edition, so there isn’t much need of remasters or reboots there. On the other hand, Dark Souls 1 could always use the port, but it would need a lot more work.
For Demon’s Souls, however, there exists a great interest among fans in seeing the game ported up to current gen systems. Not all gamers gave Demon’s Souls the time of day when it first arrived, but since the Souls brand has become more popular, it’s likely they’ll give it a try now.
