Batman: The Telltale Series Episode 1 – Review

Batman: The Telltale Series offers a true Dark Knight experience, letting players make tough choices and gather clues as Batman and Bruce Wayne.

Though intrinsically linked to Batman, it’s not that often that a Batman video game (or movie) gives equal screen time to Bruce Wayne. Batman is all action and Bruce Wayne is all set up. In a video game, if the action isn’t fast and furious (like the movie), the player gets bored and fed up of the game. It’s for this simple reason that Telltale Games is the perfect partner to bring the full story of Batman to life, to create a game where the player spends an equal amount of time as both Batman and Bruce Wayne.

Batman: The Telltale Series Episode 1: Realm of Shadows is the type of game that players hoped to see from the developer of the Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. All the various pieces are put in motion, hints are dropped along the way, also plenty of familiar DC comic characters have their screen time. All in all, it’s an episode that only Telltale knows how to deliver into public.

The story is pretty straightforward for now. Batman and Bruce are on the tail of crime boss Carmine Falcone, but there is a sens that a large plot is looming, even that early in the game. Realm of Shadows features appearances from Batman fan faves like Harvey Dent, Vicki Vale, Catwoman/Selina Kyle and one of two surprise characters. While we know these characters by name, Telltale clearly wants to put their own spin on DC Comics lore, not simply repeat it.

Batman: The Telltale Series plays the detective element of the game more than most media previously have. It is a click and point adventure game, no one is denying that, but Batman has added a new layer to the well known Telltale formula with its linking mechanic. In essence, this is about Batman being able to uncover layers of a crime scene by linking matching pieces of evidence together. This is the only game that gives the player the most Batman like experience.

With all this being said, Batman: The Telltale Series so far offers the best of both worlds experience when it comes to the Dark Knight. The Bruce Wayne sections help with both developing the plot and presenting the player with dialogue choices that will open their minds and make them think as to which choice is best. While the Batman sequences typify the character in his fullest, highlighting both his skills as a detective and tactician. Even though there are still problems here and there, this is a solid foundation for Telltale to start building from. Batman fans will definitely not want to miss out on this.
