Manic Mechanics is a chaotic couch co-op or online game for up to four players. The game takes place in Octane Isle where the players are amateur mechanics working their way through various garages in order to prove themselves as true ‘Manic Mechanics’.
The main gameplay involves the players fixing as many cars as possible in the given time limit. Each car that comes into the level will have different requirements such as needing doors painted, engines repaired, batteries charged etc. The different car parts come in via conveyor belts and must be taken to a correct station in the level where a minigame is played in order to fix that part. When a car is completed it will drive out, the player will earn some points, and a new vehicle will come in. As the players progress there will be a bigger variety of stations to deal with, different car requirements, and an increasing variety of potential hazards such as oil fires, electrified water, molten lead, and viscous vats of paint. Some parts will come into the level already fixed and with a golden aura. These parts can be immediately attached to a vehicle and provide bonus points to the fixed car total. Each level has a target score and a special “Manic Mechanic” score to provide a challenge to the player. Depending on the players’ score they’ll earn cogs which are required in order to progress further in the game.
Outside of the levels the players traverse Octane Isle in their cars where they can interact with various parts of the environment. Players must complete each level in order to progress to the next and may also require a certain cog count to unlock that level. Octane Isle is divided into 5 major regions each controlled by a Manic Mechanic boss character. After completing the 4 levels of that region, the players will take on that Manic Mechanic’s Challenge level.
