Blizzard’s fps Overwatch becomes available today and it’s a game that should help with keeping players with weaker connections in game.
The game’s high bandwidth update was announced in a developer video which was presented by Overwatch’s lead engineer Tim Ford and senior engineer Philip Orwig. The update means that the title’s online playing fan-base will be able to play better online, especially those with weaker connections in-game.
Anyone with substandard connections will be moved into a group with lower bandwidth in order to keep their games smooth and reliable. In the meantime, the interpolation delay responsible for rendering where each player is and how fast they’re moving has been reduced. This means that all heroes will be rendered more accurately in their respective locations, rather than with a silent lag on other clients.
– ‘The final result is that there will be less less shooting around corners and players will be able to predict escape moves better and the server will hear about that sooner.’ – Said Ford.
The interpolation delay will be shortened by more than 50% for players with strong connections, thanks to a new net-code incorporated in the game with the latest update.
Unfortunately for console players, the development team is currently unsure as to how they can release a high bandwidth update for Xbox One and PS4, but they reported that they’re working on a solution. The update is currently getting released for PC users only.
Connections that are less laggy will be a huge help in competitive play which is something to be considered as we enter Blizzard’s second competitive season of Overwatch. The update promised to improve reliability of matches, ensuring that each game is more fair and runs cleaner for everyone.
The high bandwidth update will be available ONLY for PC users, while, Overwatch is already out for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
