The creator of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto talks about why the Italian plumber will not make its way to VR, stating Mario is intended for ‘families to play together.’
After Super Mario Run’s debut, USA Today was able to interview Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto, taking the chance to ask if any plans for Mario coming to VR were in motion. Miyamoto was frank with his reply, insisting no such plans existed. Miyamoto did provide some and extrapolated in a very Nintendo reasoning on why Mario won’t be in VR any time soon:
“I would agree that adapting Mario to new platforms is a key to keeping him relevant. But we want families to play together, and virtual reality (which requires players to be closed off from the real world) doesn’t really fit well there. We also like people playing for a long time, and it’s hard to do that in VR.”
Generally speaking, the response from Miyamoto isn’t too surprising, especially if the nature of the event and announcement are taken into consideration. Super Mario Run was displayed during Apple’s reveal of the iPhone 7 and iPhone Plus 7. As of now, Apple has not yet moved into mobile virtual reality like Samsung has with the Gear VR headset. Although Super Mario Run will eventually arrive for Android, any VR plans would surely not be mentioned here.
Ever since the platform began moving into the mainstream, Nintendo’s stance on virtual reality has been consistent. The company has resolutely declared that it has not plans to release virtual reality products. Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime’s frequently quoted statement that “VR is no fun,” is often shared. Still, Nintendo’s CEO has at the very least admitted that he’s interested in VR, before saying that VR isn’t ready for the mainstream in recent months.
