During the PlayStation Meeting yesterday, Electronic Arts showed off a tech video for Mass Effect Andromeda which showcased some of the new environments, character, and movement options in the game.
Although the story of Mass Effect Andromeda is still unfamiliar, the visuals in BioWare’s upcoming game are certainly breathtaking. Mass Effect Andromeda stays true to the graphical aesthetic of the series, while pushing visual fidelity forward.
The demo that was shown featured an enclosed alien environment that adjusted to the player’s movements. Some smaller, floating alien creatures can be noticed in the area as well, who will most likely be a threat to Mass Effect Andromeda’s main character, Ryder.
In the last scene, we can see the two companions, an Asari character that was briefly highlighted earlier in past Mass Effect Andromeda concept art and a character hidden by a helmet and space suit, join Ryder. These two characters are undoubtedly one of several companions that will travel with Ryder on his interstellar voyage, unlike the trios formed in past Mass Effet games.
Effects in the tech demo were first-class, showcasing how the alien technology may interact with the player and influence the environment. Traditionally, Mass Effect has been all about exploring unique worlds, so it’s good to see BioWare using new technology to take those ideas to new levels. There were also shots of Ryder equipped with a new jetpack to accompany him/her on the journey, and probably unlock new ways to discover the environment.
For a gameplay teaser, seems like the Mass Effect Andromeda footage did enough to spark fans interest, without revealing too much. It’s unclear how the action RPG gameplay has changed for this next step in the series, and there was no info about how dialogue and choice will play into the proceedings. In truth, it was just a small sample of Mass Effect Andromeda, probably meant to a bigger reveal somewhere down the line.
