Fan of Nintendo Has Made a Tiny Working SNES Console

A dedicated Nintendo fan has created his own version of the Super Nintendo, making a miniature SNES out of clay and a Raspberry Pi.

After Nintendo announced the NES Classic Mini, a lot of fans of the classic console were looking forward to buying it. After all, the cute miniature version of the NES came with plenty of classic games and was a great holiday time treat. However, one Nintendo fan decided to put all that aside and make his own tiny version of the SNES instead.

Youtube user Hugo Doris, also known as lyberty5, recently revealed his creation. By putting together a USB hub and a Raspberry Pi, Doris built a miniature SNES with the power to emulate games from the console. The real treat is this device’s shell, which is hand crafted out of clay.

The console, modded after the PAL version of the Super Nintendo and the original Super Famicom, stands out due to its size. The entire console is smaller than an original SNES controller, and it’s a special sight to see.

This is not the first time a Raspberry Pi device has been used to create something for Nintendo fans to drool over. Another mod creator recently decided to turn an old Burger King children’s toy into a functional Game Boy, created from a Raspberry Pi and an emulator. This time however, the modded in question has built the entire shell of the console from scratch out of clay.

It looks like the homemade mod and content community has recently been working in full force, at least when it’s about Nintendo. A Dreamcast VMU homebrew developer has announced that they will be porting Pokemon GO to the cult handheld device, which will set a release date of 2017. In the mean time, Pokemon Uranium launched to a tremendous success, with the homemade title pulling a strong following before it got shut down by Nintendo.

Despite recent struggles, it seems like Nintendo’s lasting legacy has a huge amount of pull around it, no matter if it’s in the form of Pokemon GO’s nostalgia powered success or the dedication shown by modders in bringing classic games to life in such a way. Nintendo will be hoping that it manages to add to its successes in gaming sooner than later, and will without a doubt expect that mobile games as Super Mario Run give gamers a reason to look beyond the past and into the future of the company.
