Audio Problems in Skyrim Remaster Are Getting Fixed

Bethesda stated they will fix the reported problems with the audio in Skyrim: Special Edition next week, after fans notice the major difference in sound compared to the original release.

It did not take much for fans to notice the difference in audio quality between the remaster and the original release of Skyrim in 2011. Anyone playing the remastered version of Skyrim on PC and Xbox One may have noticed it.

After fans mentioned the audio quality on Reddit immediately after launch, Bethesda has responded saying that a fix is on its way soon. A Reddit user by the name of gstaff posted that Bethesda are testing a fix and they will have it out next week.

The Special Edition was launched last night, but there was something wrong with the audio. Nobody could tell whether it was a placebo effect or not, because there was a reasonable amount of analysing what has changed in the Special Edition, but there definitely was something off with the audio.

LasurArkinshade, by pulling the files, found that the audio files in the Skyrim Special Edition are in a different format and much more compressed than in the original. He said that the vanilla version of Skyrim has sound assets that are in uncompressed .wav format. While the Special Edition has the same sound assets in an aggressively compressed .xwm format, which is a compressed sound format designed specifically for games. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s possible to compress audio to .xwm without any quality loss.

What’s strange is the fact there is no audio issues with the PS4 version of The Special Edition of Skyrim. He said that the voiceover and music audio in the PS4 version is on a higher quality than the original PC release of Skyrim, to the point that it seems as Bethesda pushed out higher quality on purpose, but they didn’t include those files in the PC and Xbox One versions, which is very likely a mistake.

There are no details on when a fix to the audio will come, or will it be in the form a patch, which is likely. Now, what’s funny about this is a fan by the name of TI36X has already created a workaround for the problem, which are the modded sound files of the original Skyrim release.
