Pete Hines, Bethesda’s vice president revealed that Skyrim: Legendary Edition players won’t be able to transfer save files to the new Skyrim Special Edition.
Skyrim: Special Edition is getting closer and closer to getting out, but Skyrim console players will be disappointed when it comes out. Unfortunately, PS4 and Xbox One players will not be able to transfer their saves from older consoles to Skyrim: Special Edition.
Pete Hines, Bethesda’s Vice President discussed this on Twitter, shutting down hopes that players will be able to transfer saves from Skyrim: Legendary Edition on PS3 and Xbox 360 to Skyrim: Special Edition on PS4 and Xbox One. He said that players cannot transfer saves from prior console generations, nor from one system to another. An example would be transferring save files from PC to PlayStation 4, it is not possible. Hines had nothing further to say about PC gamers which adds some more anxiety to the already weak declaration that PC gamers “should” be able to transfer saves to the Special Edition of Skyrim.
This news is especially unfortunate for anyone who has invested lots of hours into Skyrim: Legendary Edition. Sadly enough, if a player wants to enjoy Skyrim: Special Edition, they will have to start over with a new Dragonborn. In addition to this, with Microsoft hoping to make money from sellin Skyrim: Special Edition, the possibility of Skyrim: Legendary Edition being added to the backward compatibility list on the Xbox One is non existent.
Bethesda recently made great progress with Sony and Microsoft to try and deliver an equal play experience on both consoles and PC. It looks like PC gamers will once again have the advantage over console gamers, now with Skyrim: Special Edition. Bethesda already promised PC gamers that anyone who owns the original Skyrim and all of the DLCs will get the Skyrim remaster for free, and that it will be compatible with existing Skyrim mods. PC players will get the best Skyrim Special Edition experience, excluding any possible bug occurrence.
This isn’t entirely Bethesda’s fault as the PS4 and Xbox One are way different than the PS3 and Xbox 360. Most remastered games that are released for new consoles don’t cooperate with the older saves, so Skyrim isn’t at all different. This decision must’ve been out of their hands, as they, over the years, have done everything they could to make players as happy as possible.
