Evolve Sees Huge Boost in Player Count After Going Free-to-Play

In less than a week ago after its re-launch as a free to play title, Turtle Rock Studios has announced that Evolve gained over one million new players on Steam.

The creature hunting game Evolve got released back in February of 2015 with loads of promises but ultimately and surprisingly managed to loose most of its player population because of different reasons that include DLC dependency, repetitive gameplay, and a lack of mods.

Not willing to give up on the game, Turtle Rock Studios has gone back to the drawing board in order to revive it as a free to play title. Although it may be shocking to many players, it seems that this is a good move for the game as its player population on PC has now grown immensely.

In a recent post on its official website, Turtle Rock announced that after Evolve re-launched less than a week ago, over 1 million new PC players entered the game. To celebrate, those who log in between now and July 18 before 10AM PT will unlock Griffin’s Blood Eagle Hunter skin at no cost. Once the promotion ends, the skin will be shown to players that previously logged in.

The news stands as a major milestone for the game which peaked a player count of over 200 in June prior to the announcement. The peak player count on Steam since then was 51,099, meaning it’s significantly higher than anytime during its launch window on PC as well. Known as Evolve: Stage 2, players on PC will have complete access to the free to play game as there aren’t any microtransactions.

An in-game currency known as silver keys unlocks for those playing the game, which is then used to unlock everything from characters, to skins, and other items that are part of the glut of DLC at launch. Those players that previously spent money on the game will be awarded with a founder status and perks such as animated icons, free silver keys, and many gifts, rewards, plus special gifts.

Evolve: Stage 2 is now playable for free on PC and coming soon to consoles.
