Bethesda explains why Quake Champions is going to be a PC exclusive title and why the PS4 and Xbox One will probably never receive the multiplayer shooter.
At E3 2016, Quake Champions was one of Bethesda’s big title announcements, an online multiplayer shooter similar to the classic Quake but with an up to date character-based structure. id Software decided to take inspiration from titles like Overwatch and Paragon in order to rebuild Quake with their updated technology from Doom’s newest remake.
Why Quake Champions is going to be a PC exclusive is the question that many players have been asking lately. After all, Paragon and Overwatch have both been released on consoles. Naturally, these questions are coming from younger gamers mostly, who aren’t familiar with Quake’s multiplayer gameplay. Fortunately for Bethesda, marketing master Pete Hines was ready to explain the answer in a straightforward manner to GameSpot: “There’s not a console that supports our vision for Quake Champions.”
Concisely put, Hines stated that Quake Champions requires a level of performance that only PC can provide. Current consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, whose games have to often decide between 1080p resolution or 60fps, simply cannot provide the required level of performance.
Hines is optimistic about future platforms however, including the PlayStation Neo and the Xbox Scorpio. He made it clear that Bethesda is going to give each platform as much consideration as it’s needed, but remained adamant that Quake Champions will be, full stop, a PC game.
For those unacquainted with classic Quake multiplayer, it was one of the original 3D twitch shooters. See and react describes the gameplay, although strategic knowledge like map layouts, weapon and armor spawns and techniques such as strafe jumps built an insanely high skill ceiling. It won’t be surprising to see Bethesda embracing the only platform that can provide the type of technology that will offer the best experience. Although Quake Champions might be very different from classic Quake multiplayer in lots of meaningful ways, platform expectations is not one of them.
